International Dental Specialist Fellowship
The Dr. Gerald Niznick College of Dentistry announces its new International Dental Specialist Fellowship (IDSF) Program. The IDSF Program is intended for internationally trained dental specialists from non-accredited programs who wish to test and enhance their knowledge in their given specialty and want to practice in Canada.

For the 2023/24 intake cycle, applications are now being accepted for the 12-month full-time fellowship for the specialty of Pediatric Dentistry, scheduled to commence on July 1, 2023. Applicants must be able to produce evidence of completion of a full-time 2-year pediatric dentistry specialty from a non-accredited program.

Fellowship Details
Participants of the Fellowship Program will attend on a full-time basis for a minimum of 12 months. Successful completion of the program will consist of passing the final year internal written and/or oral residency examinations and the completion of the assigned clinical cases to the clinical standard of practice of a graduating senior resident.

Upon successful completion of the IDSF Program, graduates will receive a certificate of completion from Post Graduate Medical Education (PGME), University of Manitoba. After satisfactory completion of the Fellowship training, the Dr. Gerald Niznick College of Dentistry will provide a letter of support and attestation of completion of the program to The National Dental Examining Board of Canada (NDEB).

This Fellowship program has emphasis on clinical training, but also includes participation in seminars and didactic learning, a scholarly project, and teaching of undergraduate dental and dental hygiene students.
Priority will be given to internationally trained pediatric dentists who demonstrate evidence of a minimum of 2 years of clinical practice and involvement in academics (e.g., rank, tenure status, academic teaching, scholarly activities, publications) and have a desire to pursue an academic pediatric dentistry career in Canada.

In addition to the pediatric dentistry residency program, Montefiore Medical Center Division of Pediatric Dentistry offers a fellowship in Pediatric Dentistry. The fellowship is an invaluable experience for dentists who are interested in pursuing specialty training and/or want to gain more experience in pediatric dentistry.

This is a one-year program that provides intensive clinical experience in pediatric dentistry. Fellows will rotate through the various Montefiore pediatric dental outpatient facilities, working alongside the pediatric dental residents and providing comprehensive pediatric dental care to children of all ages, including those with special healthcare needs. In addition to patient care, responsibilities of the fellow include emergency on-call coverage and participation in didactic activities.

The program begins July 1st and ends June 30th. Fellows receive a stipend at the PGY-2 level as well as Montefiore house staff benefits. There is a $5000 program fee (to be deducted from stipend). Upon completion of the program, fellows will receive a PGY-2 General Practice Residency certificate from Montefiore Medical Center Department of Dentistry.

Requirements:
Must possess a DDS or DMD from an accredited US/Canadian dental school;
Must have completed a PGY-1 GPR before the start of the program (but no more than a PGY-1)

The Ohio State University College of Dentistry in conjunction with the Department of Dentistry of Nationwide Children’s Hospital offers fellowships to dentists who are eligible for licensure in the State of Ohio to provide them with experience working and teaching in community-based settings in urban and rural areas. Fellows provide care to patients of all ages and supervise dental students in those settings, with a significant focus on pediatric patients. Fellows are appointed as adjunct faculty of the College of Dentistry.

Although there are small variations each year, the fellowship experience usually comprises rotations through a children’s hospital, a mobile school-based treatment van, a center for special needs children and adults, a fixed health commons dental clinic in a school, and two traditional federally qualified health centers. Fellows are eligible to audit classes and participate in other experiences as time permits and may be involved in a quality assurance or research project during the fellowship. Monthly seminars are designed to address areas of mutual interest related to the fellowship experience and are taught by faculty and residents of the Division of Pediatric Dentistry, as well as guest speakers. Fellows are encouraged to attend and participate in weekly seminars with pediatric dentistry faculty and residents.

The fellowship is a non-accredited, non-academic credit program which is primarily a service-learning experience. Fellows are exposed to pediatric, special needs, hospital care, and public health experiences and may use the fellowship to enhance skills and knowledge in those areas. Fellows often successfully pursue advanced training in pediatric dentistry or public health after the program and use the experience to improve candidacy.
