Description
Nemours/A.I. duPont Hospital for Children is a tertiary care children’s teaching hospital with a large specialty care patient population. It is ranked by US News & World Report as one of the best children’s hospitals in the nation in cancer, diabetes and endocrinology, gastroenterology and GI surgery, nephrology, neurology and neurosurgery, orthopedics, and urology. It is the only children’s hospital in Delaware and houses the Department of Pediatrics for the Sidney Kimmel School of Medicine at Thomas Jefferson University. The hospital is a level 1 trauma provider.
The Residency in Pediatric Dentistry is a twenty-four month, hospital-based program, emphasizing clinical proficiency and an interdisciplinary approach to treating the pediatric patient. A Certificate in Pediatric Dentistry is awarded to individuals who successfully complete the program. Graduates of the program will meet the advanced education eligibility requirements of the American Board of Pediatric Dentistry.
The program in pediatric dentistry is accredited by the Commission on Dental Accreditation and has been granted the accreditation status of initial accreditation. The Commission is a specialized accrediting body recognized by the United States Department of Education. Curriculum
The curriculum provides opportunity to develop proficiency in comprehensive preventive and therapeutic oral health care for infants and children through early adolescence, including those with special health care needs. Through didactic and clinical instruction, the program encourages the development of the critical and inquiring thought processes necessary for the advancement of practice, research, and teaching in pediatric dentistry.
Seminars include literature review and case presentations with faculty from a broad range of disciplines. Formal courses are presented in research design and biostatistics, pediatric advanced life support, and basic sciences. Dental residents participate with medical residents and fellows in pediatric grand rounds, departmental lectures, seminars on career development and other topics of mutual interest. Off service rotations occur in general anesthesia, sedation, pediatric medicine, pediatric emergency, speech pathology and craniofacial clinic.
Residents complete a clinical or basic science research project and written report. Research training and funds are incorporated in the curriculum. Research projects are presented at the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry Annual Session Poster Presentation Contest.
Program Stipend and Tuition
For fiscal year 2022-2023, the annual salaries of the pediatric dentistry residents are $70,860 for first year residents and $73,694for second year residents. No tuition is charged.

Admission Requirements
Applicants must fulfill the following requirements to be considered for admission:
- D.D.S. or D.M.D. graduate of a U.S. or Canadian CODA-accredited dental school with completion of school or current residency in good standing by start of orientation (end of June)
- PASS application completed
- Personal interview (upon invitation)
- Complete with a passing result, Part I of National Dental Boards prior to application and Part II by start of residency
- ADAT score will be considered if available, but not required.
- Eligible for Delaware Dental Resident Limited License prior to start of residency.
- Be a US citizen or permanent resident of the US
- Be fluent in the English language
Program Strengths
- Strong clinical participation in the treatment of both healthy and medically compromised pediatric patients
- Experience with oral sedation, IV sedation and general anesthesia in conjunction with Emergency Department, Sedation Team, and the Department of Anesthesiology
- Cooperative relationships with other departments in the hospital including, but not limited to, plastics, general pediatrics, hematology, microbiology, infectious disease, cardiology, and immunology.
- Multidisciplinary rotations throughout the hospital include anesthesiology, pediatric medicine, emergency room, speech pathology, sedation team, and craniofacial team.
- Significant experience with dental emergency patients including orofacial trauma
- Small program which creates tremendous opportunity to engage and learn within a multidisciplinary hospital setting.
