Boston University offers 10 positions each year in the 24-month Certificate of Advanced Graduate Study (CAGS) Advanced Education in Pediatric Dentistry program.

Description
The BUSDM Program of Advanced Education in Pediatric Dentistry is fully accredited by The American Dental Association Commission on Dental Accreditation and is structured according to their Requirements for Advanced Specialty Education Programs in Pediatric Dentistry. Graduates become proficient in the provision of both primary and comprehensive preventive and therapeutic oral health care for infants and children through adolescence, including those with special health care needs.
Curriculum
Didactic courses are provided in: Fundamentals of Pediatric Dentistry, Orthodontics for Pediatric Dentists, Head and Neck Anatomy, Oral Microbiology, Oral Pathology, Biostatistics, Bioethics and Law, and Research Writing.Residents are required to attend a weekly seminar that reviews the important literature related to pediatric dentistry. This seminar series prepares the residents to take the American Board of Pediatric Dentistry Examinations. In addition, residents are required to submit and present multiple case reviews of their patients.Extensive clinical experience is gained at four facilities that serve very different patient populations ranging from the largest inner city safety net hospital in New England to a pediatric rehabilitation hospital, community health center and the dental school itself. Between these four sites, a broad range of experience in the management of oral health care issues in healthy patients as well as those with special health care needs is provided.Extra-departmental rotations in Oral Surgery, Pediatrics/Emergency Room and Anesthesia are required. Additional clinical experience in orthodontics is gained during a weekly clinic at the Boston University School of Dental Medicine.A research requirement must be fulfilled for graduation.During the second year, experience is provided in teaching clinical pediatric dentistry to predoctoral students.
Program Stipend and Tuition
Supported by Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) funding, the program will accept 2 trainees to the 24-month CAGS in Pediatric Dentistry, with full tuition support (stipend not included).
The HRSA-funded training program will prepare highly competent pediatric dentists to become leaders of non-profit healthcare organizations providing oral health care to the underserved, to the vulnerable, and to patients with special needs.
To develop critical skills to successfully lead and manage a non-profit organization, funding recipients will be required to engage in additional coursework in that area. The additional coursework is concurrent with the residency training in Pediatric Dentistry.
Eligibility requirements for the HRSA-funded positions are:
- US citizen or permanent resident
- Qualify as an underrepresented minority / or from a disadvantaged background
- Prior experience working with federally-qualified health center (FQHC) and/or underserved populations is preferred.
In addition to a completed ADEA PASS application for CAGS Pediatric Dentistry, interested candidates must submit an additional Statement of Purpose expressing intent and rationale to be considered for the position, to the Department of Pediatric Dentistry at gsdmpedo@bu.edu.
