Description
The Section of Growth and Development of the College of Dental Medicine at Columbia University Medical Center is the professional anchor of specialty training in pediatric dentistry and is affiliated with NewYork-Presbyterian Kids. The program accepts 5 postdoctoral residency fellows per year for the 2-year clinical traineeship and enables residents to meet Board-eligibility requirements of the American Board of Pediatric Dentistry.
Curriculum
The general curriculum includes all topic areas obligatory to the development of a competent pediatric dentist. The approach is to advance the residents' educational experiences, enhance their ability to think, and to communicate accurate information both clearly and effectively. Residents will learn to work with consultants and Faculty in other dental specialties and in medical or allied health fields. Seminars, conferences, rounds, and case-based learning sessions allow the trainee to develop a theoretical knowledge base.
The experiential curriculum consists of ample patient care opportunities. Regular and repeated patient contact will develop residents' diagnostic abilities, clinical knowledge and procedural skills, as well as their critical judgment. Additional experience in related medical areas provide residents with an understanding of comprehensive care. Block rotations are in medicine and anesthesia; longitudinal rotations are provided in on-call as a consultant night resident at the emergency department, cleft lip & palate and craniofacial team, hospital dentistry, clinical instruction preceptorship, and educational and direct patient care outreach.
The didactic curriculum includes a core domain and selected topic areas in the basic sciences such as relevant anatomy, histology and embryology, physiology, pathology, statistics, and research methodology. Supplementary lecture, seminar, and journaling sessions are provided in child development, behavior management, preventive care including topical fluorides, cariology, limited orthodontics, procedural sedation and emergency preparedness, general anesthesia, ethics, case management, and evidence-based dentistry besides other domains.
