Description

The Pediatric Dental Residency Program at Primary Children’s Hospital is located on the University of Utah Campus in Salt Lake City, Utah. It is a 24-month, fully accredited, hospital-based program, with an emphasis on clinical proficiency and the interdisciplinary approach to treatment of pediatric dental patients. Individuals who complete the program will meet advanced education eligibility requirements of the American Board of Pediatric Dentistry (ABPD). A Certificate in Pediatric Dentistry is awarded to individuals who successfully complete the program. Pediatric dental residents serve an important role in the Emergency Department with responsibilities to work alongside healthcare providers from many departments in the treatment of oral and facial infection and dental trauma.In early 2020, Intermountain Healthcare announced a second Primary Children’s Hospital campus in Lehi, Utah to be opened in 2024. The planned 38-acre campus will feature 66 beds, and a three-story medical office building, with a combined 486,000 square feet.

Curriculum

The curriculum is designed to provide didactic and clinical instruction for the resident and an opportunity to develop proficiency with both primary and comprehensive preventive and therapeutic oral health care for infants and children through early adolescence, including those with special health care needs. The program encourages the development of a critical and inquiring attitude necessary for the advancement of practice, research and teaching in pediatric dentistry.Residents engage in scholarly activity which includes the participation in daily didactic seminars with attending faculty and completion of a clinical research project which utilizes data collection, analysis and elements of the scientific method. Research training, funds and time are incorporated in the curriculum. Program Stipend and Tuition

First-year stipend for the 2022-2023 academic year was $56,013.71. Second-year stipend was $58,959.05. As an employee of Intermountain Healthcare, comprehensive benefits are available to residents including 15 PTO days each year.

Admission Requirements

Applicants must fulfill the following requirements to be considered for admission:

  • D.D.S. or D.M.D. graduate of a U.S. or Canadian CODA-accredited dental school with completion of school or current residency in good standing by start of orientation (end of June)
  • US or Canadian citizenship or permanent resident of the US
  • Although not required, demonstration of passing grade for INBDE is preferential prior to application deadline
  • Eligibility for State of Utah dental license with Class B permit and DEA Certificate prior to start of residency
  • Proficiency/fluency in the English language
  • Completion of PASS (Postdoctoral Application Support Service) application
  • Registration with the National Matching Service
  • 4 PEF (Professional Application Forms) dentists and / or professors that know the applicant well through PASS
  • Dental and pre-professional education transcripts through PASSOfficial DAT Score
  • Recent 2 X 2 Photograph, submitted in PDF format to the program manager
  • $50 application fee payable to Primary Children’s Hospital
  • Personal interview in Salt Lake City, UT (upon invitation)
  • Live within 30 minutes of hospital by start of residency
  • ADAT score will be considered if available, but not required.

  • Strong clinical involvement in the treatment of healthy as well as the medically compromised pediatric patients
  • Experience with oral sedation, nasal sedation, IV sedation and general anesthesia in conjunction with the Department of Pediatric Anesthesiology
