Description

The Stony Brook School of Dental Medicine residency program in Pediatric Dentistry is designed to prepare the resident specialist with a curriculum balanced in didactic and clinical experiences implemented in a humanistic environment. Emphasis is placed on hospital dentistry, special needs patient care, community outreach, sedation and interceptive orthodontics as well as foundational development based in the AAPD Reference Manual. Clinical training is provided in a comprehensive dental school-based clinic with affiliated exposure to GPR, Dental Anesthesiology, Endodontics, Oral and Maxillofacial Radiology, Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopedics, Periodontics, Prosthodontics and Oral Pathology personnel. Didactic training is university-based with support from both hospital and dental specialists.

The primary goal of the program is to develop a scientifically founded, technically capable, socially sensitive pediatric dentist skilled in providing comprehensive care to pediatric patients and patients with special health care needs. Upon successful completion of all components of the program, the resident receives a Certificate in Pediatric Dentistry and meets advanced education eligibility requirements required to register for the American Board of Pediatric Dentistry Qualifying Examination, the first step in Board certification.

Curriculum

The Stony Brook University Pediatric Dentistry Residency Program offers a strong didactic component including but not limited to the basic sciences, advanced pediatric dentistry instruction, advanced orthodontic instruction, periodical review sessions, case presentations, research and teaching of pre-doctoral students. The didactic curriculum complements the residents’ clinical experiences. The core curriculum offers the knowledge and experience required in the medical and dental management of the pediatric and special needs patient. In addition, the curriculum meets the eligibility requirements of the ADA Committee on Dental Accreditation Standards for Advanced Specialty Education Program in Pediatric Dentistry and the American Board of Pediatric Dentistry Qualifying Examination.

Pediatric Dentistry residents will deliver comprehensive dental care to an ethnically, socially and financially diverse population of outpatients and inpatients. Out-patient facilities include; the School of Dental Medicine, Community Health Centers and Indian Reservations. Faculty from all dental disciplines are on staff at the SDM.

The Pediatric Dentistry program will have a strong community service component. Residents will participate in oral health programs within school based, Head Start and WIC programs and local community health centers. The resident will participate in health care provider, allied health staff and caregiver education and provide oral health services in the underserved areas of Suffolk County.

Program Stipend and Tuition

The annual salaries of Stony Brook pediatric dentistry residents are competitive with those offered in the greater New York area with first-year stipend at $67, 833 and second-year stipend at $72, 205 (2021).
