Program Length and Number of Positions

This is a 36-month program beginning July 1 of each year. Five new positions are offered each year.

Program Type

Combined University and hospital-based certificate program with a Master of Public Health (MPH) through San Jose State University or a Master of Science in Oral & Craniofacial Sciences through UCSF.

Description

The outstanding academic and clinical resources of the UCSF Health Sciences Center and UCSF Benioff Children's Hospitals provide broad-based experience and training needed to prepare for a career in academia, community public health service, or private practice.

A well-balanced didactic curriculum consisting of basic sciences core classes, pediatric dentistry lectures and seminars, and public health topics is taught throughout the program. Specialized guest speakers, resident literature reviews, and case presentations continually enhance the student's knowledge. This didactic training is complemented by in-depth clinical opportunities in outpatient clinics, operating rooms, and clinical rotations. The program aims to develop a well-rounded clinician with strong critical thinking skills able to provide compassionate and comprehensive care to all pediatric and special patients with special health care needs.

Upon successful completion of all the components of the program, the student is awarded a certificate of specialty training in Pediatric Dentistry, together with a Master of Public Health or M.S. in Oral and Craniofacial Sciences. The student also meets the advanced eligibility requirements of the American Board of Pediatric Dentistry. Third-year residents must participate in the ABPD Qualifying Exam before graduation.

Curriculum

Instruction in all areas of pediatric dentistry is provided through lectures, seminars, and clinical experience in diverse clinical settings, including specialty inpatient and outpatient clinics and hospital operating rooms. Emphasis is placed on pediatric dentistry's relationship to all other areas of dentistry and medicine, including for medically complex and special health care needs patients. All students will complete a core curriculum with biostatistics, developmental biology, oral pathology, pharmacology, genetics, and medical ethics. With the addition of the MPH program, residents will be exposed to dental public health topics that impact providing oral care to the most vulnerable population. This diverse curriculum develops students' ability to apply evidence-based principles to clinical decision-making.

The program's clinical component provides a well-balanced experience in treating healthy children, children with special health care needs, vast exposure to traumatic injuries, and children with acute medical conditions. Exposure to different pharmacological and non-pharmacological behavior guidance techniques is integral to the student's training.

Students receive well-rounded and in-depth clinical training to prepare them for multiple scenarios by enhancing their ability to respond to and manage clinical situations they will encounter in practice.
Clinical rotations include anesthesia, pediatric medicine, emergency on-call, and rotations to two affiliated FQHC (Federally Qualified Health Centers) clinics. The divisions of Orthodontics and Craniofacial Anomalies within the department lead to strong ties and education in these areas. Students are exposed to interceptive orthodontics at the beginning of the program. Students also serve as teaching assistants in the pre-doctoral pediatric dental clinic during their second year of training.

Students must complete a research project under a faculty member's supervision or a clinical research project resulting in a manuscript ready for submission to a peer-reviewed journal.

Program Stipend and Tuition

The first-year stipend is $63,148. 
The second-year stipend is $65,241. 
The third-year stipend is $67,804.

Health Insurance is offere through UCSF Plan Source. Sick and Vacation Time are part of the benefit package.

MS Tuition is ~ $20,000 per year for in-state, and $38,761 per year for out-of-state.
*MPH Tuition is $12,000 per year for 2 years. 
A $3,000/year educational fee is assessed.
