Description
The residency program is a 24-month program sponsored by the University Of Connecticut School Of Dental Medicine and is affiliated with Connecticut Children's Medical Center. It provides out-patient and in-patient clinical experiences. The program is designed to prepare residents for patient care in a private practice or hospital setting. Residents are expected to develop the clinical skills needed to treat healthy, medically compromised and developmentally disabled children, and to acquire the ability to interact effectively with other health care providers. The certificate program is two years (24 months) in length but may be extended for obtaining combined M.Dent.Sc./Certificate (36 months -oriented toward preparing the student for a career in research and teaching).
Rotations include: emergency room, chief resident, hospital resident, four-week anesthesia and a two-week pediatrics rotations. The residents provide after hour emergency coverage on a rotating basis for the Children's Hospital .Second-year residents teach in the undergraduate clinic on a rotating basis. Each resident is required to submit a written research paper suitable for publication.The resident receives a certificate and meets the advanced education eligibility requirements for the American Board of Pediatric Dentistry examination.
Curriculum
The academic course work occupies approximately 20 percent of the resident's time and includes the following numbered courses: sedation, biomaterials, advanced oral pathology, microbiology, biostatistics, craniofacial growth and development, functional oral anatomy and advanced oral histology. Pediatric dentistry specific seminars include: advanced pediatric series, case conference, journal club, introduction to pediatric dentistry, behavior management, guiding the developing occlusion and hospital dentistry.
Program Stipend and Tuition
Certificate program
Graduates from an ADA accredited Dental School: First-year stipend is $48,000, second-year stipend is $50,000.
Graduates from a non ADA accredited Dental School: First-year stipend is $38,000, second-year stipend is $40,000.
ALL enrolled residents: No tuition is charged. Medical plan is included.
M.Dent.Sc. program: Tuition is charged per credit hour.
