Program Length and Number of Positions
This is a 30-month program beginning July 1 of each year. Five MATCH positions are offered to dentists with degrees from ADA-accredited (US/Canadian) dental schools each year. One tuition-based, no stipend position is open to all dentists including those with degrees from dental schools not accredited by the American Dental Association.
Program Type
This is a university-based program with strong hospital-based components, offering a Master’s Degree (MS in Pediatric Dentistry) and certificate. We are affiliated with the University of Michigan Hospital in Ann Arbor, and Mott Children’s Health Center and Hurley Hospital in Flint.

Description
The program is designed to prepare qualified dentists for specialized private practice, teaching, research, or service within a large hospital. The course of study includes seminars, lectures, demonstrations, and clinical experiences on physical and psychological growth and development, pulpal management and restoration of the primary and young permanent dentitions, pharmacologic and non-pharmacologic guidance of child behavior, and diagnosis and treatment of selected Class I and Class II malocclusions. In addition, significant blocks of time are dedicated to hospital training and treatment of patients under general anesthesia and management of the medically compromised patient both at the University Hospital in Ann Arbor and facilities in Flint.
Residents spend the first 12 months of the program in Ann Arbor engaged in coursework, patient care, and development of a research project. The second 12 months are mainly spent in advanced clinical training in Flint at Mott Children’s Health Center and Hurley Hospital. Mott Children’s Health Center is a technologically advanced multi-disciplinary clinic whose services (including pediatric dentistry) are provided at no cost to families, allowing for the highest quality of care irrespective of the family’s ability to pay. The final six months of the program are mainly spent in Ann Arbor engaged in completion of research, teaching of predoctoral dental students, and advanced clinical activities. This program provides mentored research experience throughout the program.
Upon completion of requirements, the graduate receives a Master of Science in Pediatric Dentistry degree and a Certificate in Pediatric Dentistry from the University of Michigan and meets the advanced education eligibility requirements for the American Board of Pediatric Dentistry examination.
Curriculum
Clinical courses include advanced pediatric dentistry clinic, orthodontic clinic one day per week for 18-months, and rotations to the University of Michigan Hospital and Mott Children’s Health Center/Hurley Medical Center.
Didactic courses include advanced seminars in pediatric dentistry in the areas of Advanced Behavior Guidance; Pulp Therapy; Restorative Materials and Techniques; Cephalometric Analysis; Principles of Occlusal Development; Biomechanics; Orthodontic Treatment of selected Class I and Class II Malocclusion; General Anesthesia for Infants and Children; Problems of Children’s Health, Growth, Development, and Behavior; Rehabilitation of Children with Craniofacial Anomalies; Psychology of Child Development; Dental Care for Children and Adolescents with Disabilities; Design and Analysis in Research; and Investigation leading to a Masters Thesis.
Program Stipend and Tuition
Stipend level is $36,000 for the first year, $48,000 for the second year, and $25,000 for the third half-year. Tuition (subject to annual increase) is in the first year is $29,290 for in-state students, $49,806 for out-of-state students. No tuition is charged in the second year. Tuition in the third half-year is $14,645 for in-state students and $24,903 for out-of-state students.
Facilities
During the first year, clinical activities are conducted in the Pediatric Dentistry Clinic at the University of Michigan, School of Dentistry, and at outpatient and operating room sites at the University of Michigan Mott Children’s Hospital. During the second year, residents rotate to the Mott Children’s Health Center and Hurley Hospital in Flint. The final 6 months of the program is spent mainly at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor.
Admission Requirements
MATCH positions (5 per year):
- DDS or DMD from an ADA accredited dental school in the US or Canada
- Professional and educational transcripts
- Application through PASS and participation in MATCH
- Three letters of recommendation
- Interview (by special invitation)
- Successful applicants selected through MATCH must apply to Rackham School of Graduate Studies.
Single position open to dentists with degrees from non-ADA accredited dental schools: (1 per year; 30-month University-based program is not eligible for program stipend; this graduate student completes all patient care at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor and does not rotate to Flint):
- DDS or DMD equivalent
- Professional and educational transcripts
- Application through University of Michigan Rackham School of Graduate Studies
- Three letters of recommendation
- TOEFL: written over 560, computer base over 220 and/or the Michigan Language Test over 80
