This is a 24-month program beginning late June of each year. Six new positions are offered each year.

Description

The residency program in pediatric dentistry offers training in all aspects of the specialty. The American Dental Association’s Commission on Dental Accreditation has approved the program without reporting requirements. Outpatient treatment occurs primarily at the Eastman Dental Center. Residents also provide care at a number of different community outreach clinics under the direct supervision of attending pediatric dentists. Children with special health care needs are also treated at the Eastman Dental Center. For patients that require general anesthesia, treatment is performed in the Pediatric Surgical Suite at Golisano Children’s Hospital and the URMC Ambulatory Surgical Center at Sawgrass Surgical Center. Upon completion of the program, residents receive a Certificate in Pediatric Dentistry and meet the advanced education eligibility requirements of the American Board of Pediatric Dentistry examination.

Curriculum

All residents attend regularly scheduled lecture series presented by leading practitioners and researchers on basic and applied topics such as oral disease prevention, epidemiology, and cariology along with scientific foundations and evidenced-based practice in clinical pediatric dentistry, growth and development, and pediatric medicine. The Pediatric Dentistry residency program also includes courses in: behavior management, pediatric pharmacology and sedation, interceptive orthodontics, oral medicine, oral surgery, pathology, periodontology, pulp therapy, head and neck traumatic injuries, dental care for patients with medical complexities, and pediatric physical diagnosis. Intensive clinical rotations in the Departments of Anesthesiology, Pediatrics and Emergency Medicine are provided for all residents. All residents must prepare and present a research project with application to pediatric dentistry to achieve certification. Those interested in graduate studies may expand these projects and combine them with course work at the University of Rochester leading to an advanced academic degree after one or more additional years of study.

Program Stipend and Tuition

No tuition is charged. Technology fee of $1800 per year. Stipend $63,870 for year 1; $66,259 for year 2. Benefits can be viewed here.
