Program Length and Number of Positions

This is a 24-month program beginning mid-June of each year. Six positions are offered on a yearly cycle.

Program Type

This is a hospital-based program offering a certificate degree. Additional degrees of study are available through the Yale School of Medicine and Yale School of Public Health.

Application

The program application deadline is October 1st of each year, pending matriculation. The program participates in the Postdoctoral Application Support Service (PASS). Description

The residency program is based at the Pediatric Dentistry Center of Yale-New Haven Hospital, the principle educational affiliate of Yale University School of Medicine. The key objective of the program is preparation of future educators, mentors, researchers, and leaders in the specialty of Pediatric Dentistry as well as qualified clinicians for private practices and community services. The mission of this 24-month program is to provide specialty-level training in the delivery of comprehensive dental care for children, with special emphasis on caring for children with special health care needs. 

This program provides in-depth clinical, didactic and research experiences and is fully accredited by the ADA Council on Dental Education and the Commission on Dental Accreditation. Upon completion of the program, the graduate resident receives a Certificate in Pediatric Dentistry from Yale-New Haven Hospital and meets the advanced education eligibility requirements of the American Board of Pediatric Dentistry.

Curriculum

Built on a strong academic foundation, the clinical curriculum is designed to provide a broad array of out-patient and in- patient experiences in delivery of pediatric medical and dental care. The primary clinical activity of the program is delivery of direct patient care in the Pediatric Dentistry Center and the Pediatric Operating Rooms. Residents in pediatric dentistry also have the opportunity to provide consultations to a variety of medical services in the hospital and to participate in multidisciplinary health care teams within the medical center. Residents also obtain a certification in Pediatric Advanced Life Support.
Rotations include the outpatient Primary Care Center, the in-patient Pediatric Medicine Department, the Pediatric Emergency Department and the Department of Pediatric Anesthesiology. Other rotations include the craniofacial, child abuse and neglect, hematology, oncology and community services.

Didactic courses include lectures in the biomedical sciences including biostatistics, investigational medicine, anatomy, pharmacology, microbiology, embryology and genetics. Core courses for pediatric dentistry include lectures in cariology and preventive dentistry, pulp therapy for primary and permanent teeth, restorative dentistry, dental trauma, behavior guidance, moderate sedation, special care patients, dental anomalies and oral pathology. Core courses in orthodontics include craniofacial growth and development, interceptive orthodontics, cephalometrics and occlusion.

Research includes the completion of didactic lectures indicated above as well as the completion and submission of an original research paper of publishable quality and presentation of that paper at the AAPD annual session.

Program Stipend and Tuition

First-year stipend is $61,509. Second-year stipend is $63,731. Residents in pediatric dentistry at Yale-New Haven Hospital receive a comprehensive benefits package.

Facilities

The Pediatric Dentistry Center at Yale-New Haven Hospital is a state-of-the-art clinical facility. The facility includes a child-oriented patient waiting area, six-fully-equipped treatment rooms including digital radiography and computerized chair side record keeping, digital panoramic and cephalometric x-ray facilities, oral and IV sedation suite, dental laboratory space, business and faculty office space, resident study areas, pediatric dentistry library/conference room and staff lounge. Each resident is assigned his/her own treatment room and dental assistant.

Admission Requirements

• D.D.S. or D.M.D. from an ADA accredited dental school in the US or Canada
